Month: August 2021

Parish Newsletter – February 2021

WE ARE WELL INTO 2021 and plans are being made for an interesting year. The Covid-19 vaccine is available and many of you have already experienced the joy of receiving it, and a new President of the USA is settling in. My Friendship Book for February quotes Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens) as saying “Wrinkles should merely indicate where the smiles have been.” So, let’s wipe away the wrinkles and smile! Life goes on and so must we.

I hope you are all well and staying safe. There are a couple of important meetings this month. I hope you will all. as much as possible, participate.. . . . Billie

BISHOP GREG RICKEL to visit ST. DAVID’S on February 21st. It was hoped that his visit would be in person but at this time we believe it will be via Zoom… A special notice will be sent from Cheri as soon as we know for sure, as well as the link to access it.. We are looking forward to the visit with Bishop Rickel and hope that many will take this opportunity to get to know him. Keep the date – 2/21/21, 11:30 a.m. via Zoom

THE ANNUAL MEETING will begin at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom following the worship service on Sunday, February 14. Patti Case will assume the duties as Sr. Warden with Don Kay serving as Co-Sr. Warden.. Mike Callaghan and his wife, Judy, are taking a much-needed vacation in Arizona. Special thanks were extended to Mike for serving as Sr. Warden during this difficult time. New Vestry members will be selected to replace those retiring from the Board – Judy Ogden, and Tamra Ingwaldson have served their terms. Thank you ladies – job well done! Please ‘zoom’ in for the meeting. It is the one time per year that we can meet, ask questions we may have and voice our opinions. See you 2/14/21 – 11:30 via Zoom.

VESTRY NEWS . . .Our Treasurer, Laurie McClanahan, reported that several pledges are in but more need to come in to enable us to meet our obligations. If you haven’t sent yours in, please do so and if you haven’t decided yet, we need you. Jr. Warden, Cheri Ratay, reported that the boiler has been upgraded and Fr. Duane and Beth Johnson met to discuss electrical issues.

The new Church Directory is ready and will be sent soon. Those who already have a binder will receive the inserts and those without a binder will receive a special bound copy. A church clean-up day will be scheduled soon. An updated draft of the reopening plan for Church services has been okayed by both Bishop Rickel and the Vestry. If there are questions please let Don Kay or Fr. Duane know your concerns.

The Vestry passed motions to purchase Communion Cups containing sealed wafer and grape juice which will allow us to offer drive-up communion. We also voted to purchase a Zoom account, Rite-Planning software and a marketing program. A Vestry retreat is tentatively planned to be held in March.

A proposal was made to rename the kitchen area in honor of Marian Eveleth, who spent much of her time planning and working coffee hours and other functions for St. David’s. A sign will be made indicating “Marian’s Kitchen.”

A SHORT VESTRY MEETING WILL BE SCHEDULED following the Annual Meeting to pass the budget for 2021. Vestry members will be advised of date and time.

OUTREACH MINISTRY . . . Dianna Dryden is requesting help with the Community Lifeline dinners. Larry and Mary DeForrest are taking a much-needed rest from the chores of putting the meals together. We thank them for their ministry and faithfulness.

If you can assist Dianna and her helpers in this important ministry, please call her at 360-898-3188 or email her at canalana@live.com. This is an important part of our outreach ministry.

The Saints’ Pantry reported end-of-the-year figures: 226,185 pounds of food served to 17,961 individuals in 7,278 households. Director Rebecca Marquez has done a great job of serving families in need in really tough times. We also thank our congregation for the continued support of this ministry. BISHOP RICKEL’S VISIT

Parish Newsletter – January 2021

HAPPY NEW YEAR . . . Here we go again – a New Year and a new Priest for St. David’s. How good is that? The Rev. Duane Fister came to us in December. Upon graduation from Washington State University in 1975, he continued to live in Pullman where he began his electrical contracting business and was also hired to be a staff pastor at a large non-denominational congregation. His education includes a Master of Divinity from a church-based college, the College of Ministry Training. He received a Doctor of Practical Ministry degree from Wagner Leadership Institute in Colorado Springs and most recently graduated from a Lutheran-specific course of study at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary  in Berkeley. As well, he is still an electrical contractor.

He and his wife, Lynn, have three girls and one boy. They have actively participated together in all manner of pastoral work and pastoral care. Lynn has been involved in various non-profit and church volunteer activities. She is also a licensed C.P.A. and currently serves as Executive Director of the Student-Athletic Health and Well-Being Grant Program for the Pacl2 Conference.

The Fister’s are lifelong learners and enjoy reading, book club, entrepreneurship, hanging out with family and friends, and particularly loving on grandchildren. Their family consists of 21 family members with eleven grandchildren plus four granddogs. They are as pleased to receive the congregation of St. David of Wales into their circle of new family and friends as we are to receive them. The Fister’s reside in North Mason County.

WE THANK FR. STEVE for holding us together in the Interim. He took over the position with enthusiasm during the Pandemic and conducted streaming services, and zoom meetings. Although he holds another job, he managed to meet and greet members of the congregation and spread good-will within it. He and his wife Beth have actively participated in church activities. We thank them for not only their enthusiasm but strengths in a time of need. We hope they will still be able to be involved as time goes on.

VESTRY NEWS . . . With the Annual Meeting coming up in February, there are some things we will have to think about.

Sr. Warden Mike Callaghan will be retiring and members Judy Ogden and Tamra Ingwaldson have completed their terms of office. An election of new members and the appointment of a new Senior Warden by Fr. Duane will be on the agenda.

Also, Jr. Warden Cheri Ratay reports that the heat is on again in the Church. The problem with the furnace has been detected and fixed.

BIBLE STUDY CLASSES will return using the Zoom platform. These meetings will take place following the Sunday service at approximately 12:00. As soon as the plan is in place, you will receive instruction from Cheri via a church memorandum on how to access the Adult Education Hour. Hopefully, the first will be held on January 3rd. Fr. Duane is anxious to begin.

COMMUNITY LIFELINE . . . Dianna Timm Dryden is on the Board of Directors for Community Lifeline. She is requesting our help with the Dinner Meals.

Once a month she needs contributions for the evening meal. Other churches in the community contribute on different nights each month as well. Dianna selects a theme for the meal and members of the church donate an item. The staff of CLL serves the meal.

If you can help with this outreach ministry, please give her a call at 360-463-7859 or email at canalana@live.com.
